Meaning

Airport tax Charge levied by a city, state or country at the time of passengers departure.
Baggage Articles, effects and other personal property of a passenger as are necessary or appropriate for his wear, use, comfort or convenience in connection with the trip.
Baggage allowance The per person amount of baggage by total weight, or the number of pieces of volume that will be transported free of charge.
Baggage claim area That part of the arrival airport terminal where passengers may claim the baggage checked in at departure.
Baggage tag Means a document issued by a carrier solely for identification of checked baggage
Boarding pass Card handed to passenger before boarding an aircraft.I t usually indicates the class, compartment and seat number allotted to the passenger. It may also indicate the departure gate.
Booking Equivalent to the term reservation; allotment in advance of seating or sleeping accommodation for a passenger or of space or weight capacity for baggage.
Carrier equivalent to airline.
Check-in Formalities undertaken by a passenger at an airport before departure, or a guest upon arrival at a hotel.
Child a person who has attained his second but not his twelfth birthday.
City terminal An airline office, other than at the airport, where a passenger may check-in for a flight, receive seat assignment, check baggage and obtain ground transportation to the airport.
Conditions of carriage Means the terms and conditions established by a carrier in respect to its carriage.
Conditions of contract Means the terms and conditions shown on the passenger documentation, such as a ticket ad baggage check.
Configuration The interior arrangement (number, class and arrangement of seats) of a vehicle or an aircraft.
Confirmed reservation Oral or written statement by a hotel, shipping company ,airline or a supplier that the request for reservation has been received and will be honored.
Connecting flight A flight which requires the passenger to change aircraft as part of the itinerary.
Damage includes death, injury, delay, loss, partial loss or other damage of whatsoever nature arising out of or in connection with carriage or other services performed by carrier incidental thereto.
Destination Means the ultimate stopping place according to the contract of the carriage.
Direct flight Flight between two predetermined points that does not require a passenger to change aircraft even though there may be intermediate stops.
Downgrade To move a passenger involuntarily to a lower-grade class of service.
Endorsement Authority from an airline to transfer a transportation document( air ticket or flight coupon ) to another airline.
Estimated Time of arrival (ETA) Time when an aircraft or ship is expected to reach a location or destination.
Estimated Time of Departure (ETD) Time at which an aircraft or ship is expected to leave a location.
Excess baggage Part of the baggage which is excess of the baggage which may be carried free of charge.
Excess baggage charge Amount charged for the carriage of excess baggage.
Flight coupon Means that portion of the ticket that bears the notation good for passage and indicates the particular places between which the passenger is entitled to be carried.
Flight number Specific designation of a flight expressed in letters and figures. It consists of the airline designator (two-character code) and of the number of the flight (one to four-digit number).
Freedoms of the air Traffic rights bilaterally arranged between various nations.
Gateway city City (airport) serving the passenger as entry or departure point.
Go-Show A Passenger without reservation who is able to board the plane.
Inclusive Tour A tour at a flat rate including airfare, accommodation, transfers sight seeing, etc but not necessarily covering all costs.
Infant A passenger who has not reached his second birth date.
Intermediate class Class of service which seating standards which may be superior to those provided on economy tourist class, but less liberal then those provided in first class.
International Carriage Carriage in which, according to the contract of carriage, the place of departure and any place of landing are situated in more than one state.
International Date Line Imaginary line at approximately 180 Longitude in the Pacific Ocean where the earth’s day begins by international agreement.
In transit visitor Person who interrupts a journey for a short period either out of necessity or by choice without leaving the transit lounge and not proceeding through immigration and customs.
Issuing Carrier Airline whose ticket is issued or in whose name a ticket is issued.
Load factor The percentage of the total of an aircraft’s capacity which has been sold
Loading bridge A covered passageway from an airport terminal building to an air craft for the use of embarking and disembarking passengers. It is also called finger dock.
Minimum Connecting The time needed for through-checked passengers and baggage in transit to connect between two scheduled flights.
Miscellaneous Charges Document issued by an air line or its agent which requests the issuance of a ticket or the supplying of certain services, such as sight seeing, transfers, etc.
Neutral Unit of Unit of common international value established by IATA to calculate international airfares and charges.
No-Show Passenger holding a reservation on a flight, who fails to use and to cancel it.
On request Term used to indicate that space or service has been requested but is not yet confirmed.
Open Ticket Ticket that does not specify the date on which the service is to be performed, leaving the passenger to secure a reservation at a later date.
Origin The starting point at which a journey commences.
Overbooking The deliberate or mistaken confirmation of more reservations than available (aircraft seats, hotel rooms or cabins on ship).
Passenger Means any person, except members of the crew, carried or to be carried in an aircraft/ ship with the consent of the carrier/shipping company.
Passenger coupon or Portion of the Passenger ticket and baggage check issued by or on behalf of a carrier, which constitutes the passenger’s written evidence of the contract of carriage.
Prepaid ticket advice Notification by Teletype, commercial wire or mail that a person in one city has requested issuance of prepaid transportation to a person in another city.
Reconfirmation Procedure by which passengers/clients confirm their intention to use the reserved service.
Refund Reimbursement to purchaser of all or a portion of a fare, rate, or charge for unused service.

Revalidation Sticker Official notice affixed to a flight coupon to indicate that a new reservation has been made.
Shuttle Service High frequency means of transport mainly used over short distances.
Stand-by Passenger who does not hold a confirmed reservation, but who waits at the airport ready to travel if a seat becomes available.
Stopover Deliberate interruption of a journey, requested by the passenger, at a place between points of departure and destination.
Terminal Building at airport (or seaport) where the formalities for departing and arriving passengers are processed.
Traffic Documents Airline’s passenger tickets and other travel authorization forms.
Transfer Local transportation and porterage for example, from one terminal to another, from airport to hotel, from hotel to theater, etc. It may be prearranged, Prepaid and/or part of an inclusive tour.

Unaccompanied minor Child traveling by air without being accompanied by an adult.
Upgrade A voluntary change to a better class of service.
Waitlist List used in reservations for passengers/clients who are waiting for confirmation of a service, which is fully booked at the time of reservation.

Check-in Registration formalities made on arrive al at the hotel. Guests are requested to sign a hotel registration card and in some countries, deposit their passport at the reception. The check – in dead line is usually 1800 hours.
